It was fall of 2015 when Baljeet Singh first walked the hallways of the College. As an international student, he remembers the nervousness, the excitement, and the curiosity he felt starting his academic career. But he didn’t know that it was also the beginning of his journey into volunteering.

During his time at Langara, Baljeet participated at Langara’s International Service Trip to Kenya and worked as a Career Leader in the Co-op and Career Development Centre as a Student Ambassador. He has been an executive committee member of Langara’s Sikh Association and was the Vice-President and President of the Langara Toastmaster Club. After graduating with a degree in Computer Science, in August 2018, Baljeet started working at Powerex as a Software Quality Assurance Analyst and is now a Software Developer at Ceridian.

For Baljeet, Langara has always felt like home. “It was due to all the learning opportunities, experiences and people that I met at the College,“ said Baljeet. “Now having a combination of college and work experience with improved skills, I feel like I’m able to give back to the community which contributed a lot into building up my skills.“ Baljeet radiates gratitude and passion. When we asked him who he would like to pass gratitude to, his eyes lit up.

He pauses and says, “there were many important people that I need to thank including instructors, staff and faculty who inspired me and supported me during my time at Langara. But I would like to extend my deep gratitude to the team from the Office of Student Engagement.” He says, “They inspired me to become a better listener, leader and a kind and supportive person. They supported my personal growth immensely by nudging me outside of my comfort zone and giving me opportunities to shine.”

Currently, he is volunteering with Blood Donation and is part of the Alumni Engagement Team (AET). It’s been four years since he was a student and Baljeet continues to be an active member of the community. He hopes that in the next few years he is able to build an engaging Langara Alumni community along with fellow Langarans and create a space for alumni to network and learn.
