Tim is a true pioneer and champion of the LGBT community. Coming out in 1975, Tim rediscovered his spirituality and became the first openly gay student at the Vancouver School of Theology and minister ordained by the United Church of Canada. He performed the first same-sex marriage in BC in 2003.
Entering politics in 1995, Tim was the first openly gay Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) elected in BC and cabinet minister in Canada, serving as the Deputy Speaker and Minister for Employment and Investment. As City Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Tim helped make Vancouver one of the most inclusive and diverse cities in the world by championing initiatives including the city’s first LGBT Advisory Committee, designation of the Pride Parade as a civic event, and recognition of the historical significance of Davie Village. Starting at the College in 1970, Tim is one of Langara’s original students and currently a Religious Studies instructor at Langara.
