Course Description-English 2237: Gothic Studies UK with English 1181: History of Drama & Theatre I
These on-site survey courses will trace the history of the Gothic from its bloody theatrical roots in Classical drama through Medieval mystery plays, Renaissance revenge tragedy, and 18th and 19th century anxieties about mobs, foreigners, hybrids, women and self-control to 20th century fascination with ghosts, memory & atmosphere, and our current obsessions with the uncanny return of the past and the problems associated with ontological instability.
Prerequisites
At least one term of first-year college level English. Open to anyone with these qualifications, including, but not exclusive to Langara students, alumni, students from other institutions and anyone curious about the Gothic.
