Secondary Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, UBC

The Faculty of Education offers a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Teacher Education which prepares students to teach Grades 8 to 12 in secondary schools.

• Completing UBC's 11-month program leads to a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and recommendation for teacher certification by the Ministry of Education Teacher Certification Branch (TCB).This qualifies students to apply for certification to teach in the province of British Columbia. Students can also apply elsewhere in Canada and abroad, although each province and country has its own certification requirements.

The Bachelor of Education has specific requirements for each teachable subject area. Students are strongly advised to consult UBC Admissions Advising before finishing their first degree.

 To be admitted into the Bachelor of Education program, students must meet the following minimum requirements*:

1. Conferred Bachelor degree (120 credits) from an accredited post-secondary institution.
   
   
2. A minimum average of 65% (2.5 on a 4 point scale) on the senior courses, normally numbered 300 or higher, as defined on UBC's self-assessment worksheets.
   
   
3. Specific academic requirements for one or two teachable subjects as outlined by UBC. See UBC's list of current eligible teachable subjects and their specific academic requirements.
   
   
   • Students must complete 6 credits of English literature and composition or equivalent. 
   • Applicants to the French Immersion specialization must  complete 6 credits of French literature and composition.
     
     
4. English proficiency test for students with a degree from a post-secondary institution where English is not the principle language of instruction. This program only accepts the TOEFL and IELTS tests.
   
   
5. Minimum of 100 hours experience working or volunteering with groups of 10 or more young people from 13-17 years of age.
