Jewish Seniors Alliance has been recruiting and training volunteers in peer support since 2011 and offers senior peer counseling, friendly visiting, friendly phone calls, a walking volunteer program and a computer tech support program for seniors, We are inclusive and have volunteers from all religious and ethnic backgrounds.

 

To further recruit and train volunteers from different religious and ethnic backgrounds we are seeking Chinese volunteers who speak either or both Cantonese and Mandarin to provide friendly visiting, socialization and emotional support to Chinese seniors living in Vancouver and in the Lower Mainland.


The volunteer training is being offered at no cost and at the end of training the volunteers will get a certificate.

 

Position Title: Friendly Visitor Volunteer for Chinese Seniors

 

Position Description:

The volunteer will do weekly visits with Chinese seniors living in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland to provide socialization and engagement and to reduce the seniors' isolation and loneliness. The activities can include home visits, going out for coffee, accompany to Chinese community centres and going out for walks.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

The volunteer should have an interest in community service or in helping seniors and speak either Cantonese and/or Mandarin. The volunteer must be patient and a good listener and make a commitment to visit the senior for one hour once a week.

 

Benefits and Recognition:

The volunteer will receive an intense and detailed training about seniors and age related issues and as well issues specific and relevant to Chinese seniors living in Vancouver. The volunteer position will provide an opportunity to give their time and support to the Chinese senior community and will provide the volunteer with professional experience to add onto their curriculum vitae or resume.

 

Time of day of volunteer engagement:

After school in the late afternoons, week-ends or to be determined between the client and the volunteer
