Position Description
The Canadian Red Cross, a not for profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping people and communities in Canada and around the world in times of need, is currently seeking volunteers to join our Friendly Calls Program team.

This is an opportunity to help individuals feel connected with their communities, assist in reducing the effects of loneliness and strengthen their resilience toward wellness and independence.  

 

Your Role
As a member of our Friendly Calls Program team, you will: 

  • Establish and maintain regular telephone contact with assigned program participants for the purpose of providing companionship and emotional support, and connections to community resources as required; 
  • Consult with Friendly Calls Coordinator or designate for contact with other health professionals and for referrals to other services; 
  • Keep detailed accurate records  
  • Escalate any concerns regarding assigned program participants to the coordinator/designate; and
    participate in ongoing learning opportunities as required. 

When and where you would volunteer
Depending on the province or territory, work is either performed from a remote home office or a Canadian Red Cross office during daytime hours.

 

If within a Red Cross office, all National and Provincial Health Standards are followed during COVID-19, including PPE, social distancing, and regular hand hygiene practices as required.

Some evening and weekend opportunities may be available depending on the province or territory.



Required Skills & Experience

  • Commitment - to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement and the core competencies of team excellence, service excellence, accountability and results focused
  • Customer Service Skills - dedicated to supporting those affected by loneliness and/or isolation, remain focused and respond decisively. 
  • Language fluency - to deliver services in English and/or French; additional languages are an asset. 
  • Communication skills - attuned to supporting with active listening and the ability to explain and confirm understanding, express empathy. 
  • Attention to detail - completing forms and providing statistics.
  • Computer use – ability to enter data into a spreadsheet or database, email, as well as ability to access online training.
  • Teamwork values - sharing information, helping team members, respectful of diversity, approachable, building relationships.
  • Dependable and reliable

This position will require a satisfactory Enhanced Police Information Check or equivalent.
