The Writing Centre accepts applications at the beginning of each semester – Spring, Summer, and Fall – from SWAP students who want to become peer tutors. We also have volunteer opportunities for students not eligible for SWAP, so if you are interested, sign up through VOLT, the Langara Volunteer Office.
To qualify, you should:
- have completed six credits of first-year English (or equivalent)
- be a full-time student (taking at least three courses)
- be eligible for SWAP (Student Work Assistance Program)*
- have excellent writing skills
- have excellent interpersonal skills
- enjoy helping others
Working in the Writing Centre gives you a paying job right here on campus and helps you, through teaching others, become a better writer yourself.
Tutors will receive training at the beginning of their first semester of tutoring.
A normal assignment is four hours per week. Depending on the Writing Centre’s needs and the tutor’s own schedule, it can be a little more or less than that, depending on the number of SWAP hours a tutor has per semester.
To apply, please send an e-mail to the coordinator, indicating your interest and (briefly) your reasons for wanting to work in the Writing Centre.
