11 Mindful Minutes at 11

Join us for 11 Mindful Minutes at 11am again this Summer! This workshop series was started in Summer 2020 to support our students and community through the stress of navigating school and work during the pandemic. Take this time to connect with yourself, relax the nervous system, and become more present. Starting again May 18, 2021, we will meet at 11am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through out the semester until the last week of classes. Just click the link below to join us!

These mindfulness meditation sessions will run in the Summer 2021 semester from May 18 through to August 5.


Career Exploration through Active Engagement (90 minutes)
Lulin Zheng (MA, RCC), Counsellor
Come and join Lulin on Zoom for 90 minutes of fun for an engaging session of career exploration. You will be asked to reflect on your experiences from the positive psychology perspective. Dynamic self-exploration techniques will be introduced. You will also participate in an online self-assessment and watch a video of an information interview. The concept of positive uncertainty and planned happenstance will be explored to help your career decision-making. Finally, we will finish with a poem written by a UBC professor to showcase his career development.

Join Counselling Services for a variety of free Student Success workshops offered throughout the year. The full list of workshops include:

Applying the Science of Happiness during COVID-19 – This workshop focuses on the scientific basis of happiness and the latest and most practical research findings that are now being applied to help participants elevate their level of happiness on a day to day basis.

Brain, Emotions, Health – This workshop will explore the relationship between the brain and emotions, and how this relationship affects health. Various techniques have been developed by researchers which can result in greater concentration and emotional focus. These techniques will be reviewed in the workshop. Concentration and "emotional intelligence" can have profoundly positive effects on overall health.

Concentration & Mastery Learning – This workshop focuses on the latest research findings with respect to student attitudes to learning goals and ability (or ‘intelligence’). Students are given specific techniques (e.g. Mastery Learning) that can enhance focus and concentration, leading to a significant increase in academic performance.

How to Learn Biology – This workshop will cover the latest research in the field of biology learning and focus on the most effective learning and study strategies for biology courses.

How to Learn Math & Physics – This workshop will cover the latest research on the most effective learning and study strategies for math and physics courses; study and learning strategies for other lab courses and computer science will also be discussed.

Improve Your Thinking-Improve Your GPA – This workshop will introduce students to styles of thinking that can help improve grades. Examples of techniques used will be the S.I.P.A.R. method, thinking strategies (such as the use of analogies for learning difficult concepts), and the Big Picture-Details technique.

Learning & Memory – Learn about the most recent research on the human brain, the process of memory, and how it can help you study. There will be some general techniques and exercises to improve your memory for your course work and exams. Specific memory tips are also provided for students enrolled in Math/Sciences as well as the Humanities/Social Sciences. Please bring notes and books that give you the most difficulty.

Meditation Techniques for Higher Grades – This workshop will examine three of the most effective meditation (e.g. focused awareness, mindfulness) and emotional management strategies that improve your GPA. Students will also be introduced to the impact of Growth Mind strategies and their potential for expanding brain capacity.

Mid-Term Exam Preparation – This workshop prepares you for mid-term exams notably with respect to online learning. Topics discussed are the most effective exam-preparation techniques and how to perform effectively in online exams.

Preparing for Final Exams & Coping with Exam-Anxiety – In this workshop, participants learn how to deal with stress and exam anxiety notably with respect to online learning, as well as specific techniques for taking multiple-choice, true and false, and essay type exams. Topics covered include review tips for exams in a number of subjects, including math, science, and the social sciences.

Speed-Reading – This is a practical hands-on workshop that teaches you to read faster and to master larger ‘chunks’ of information in shorter periods of time. This workshop incorporates the latest research in reading strategies. Exercises will include eye movement training, “chunk” reading, scanning, probing techniques, etc. Note that students MUST bring their own classroom textbooks.

Super-Learning Strategies for Better Grades – This workshop introduces students to the latest techniques for Superlearning to achieve higher grades such as the Rose & Nicholl 6-step Plan, the Deporter Quantum Learning System, and the Ehrenburg Technique.

Take Better Notes. Get Better Grades – In this workshop, we will focus on a variety of strategies for taking good notes. We will also briefly discuss how our memory system takes in information and how effective note taking can facilitate the learning process.

Time Management – Learn tips on managing your time for the semester and how to budget time for classes, studying, and leisure activities. Topics such as procrastination, attitudes toward studying, and study tips are discussed.
