Regalia Rental

Order your regalia for Convocation 2019 on the Gaspard website now!

All graduating students who are attending the Convocation Ceremonies must reserve their regalia through the Gaspard Regalia Registration website by 11:55 pm PST on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

The rental cost for regalia is $35, payable directly to Gaspard. The cost of the rental includes the hat and tassel which is kept by the student after the ceremony. The gown and hood/tippet will need to be returned after the ceremony.

In order to cross the stage, all graduands are required to wear regalia.

Regalia must be picked up 1 hour and 45 minutes prior to the ceremony start time at the entrance on 884 Granville Street.

Graduands who do not reserve their regalia online during the time frame posted above, can pay a late fee of $60 and rent their regalia at the Orpheum. There will be a limited amount of regalia available for rental at the Orpheum on a first-come, first-served basis. Availability is not guaranteed. We cannot guarantee that we can accommodate all students who require this service. Therefore, we highly recommend that all graduands who want to attend the ceremonies order their tickets and regalia prior to the deadline.

Students are welcome to wear ceremonial First Nations' regalia, law enforcement, or armed forces formal dress uniform in place of or with Langara regalia. If you will be wearing any of these alternatives, please email convocation@langara.ca to confirm your attendance.

Academic Regalia

It is traditional for graduands, faculty, staff, and distinguished guests to wear academic regalia at convocation ceremonies. Academic regalia has its history in the academic costumes of 14th and 15th century universities in England, particularly Oxford and Cambridge. The gown, hood, and mortarboard are the basic items of academic regalia and originally had practical functions. The hood as specifically created to provide protection from inclement weather. Along with the rest of the costume, it now has a symbolic function, its colours and style representing the type of credential and the institution that awards it.

At Langara, the President wears our presidential regalia, a green gown with black and gold accents. In 2015, the President's regalia was altered by acclaimed Musqueam artist, Debra Sparrow, to include traditional Musqueam blanket patterns and two wolves, a nod to President Trotter's Musqueam name, Takaya, which means wolf. Faculty, staff members, and distinguished guests wear regalia of the institute from which they obtained their highest credential.

Graduands from Bachelor's Degree Programs will wear a black gown, a hood which drapes around the shoulders, signifying the degree earned, and a hat with tassel.

Graduands from Post-Degree Programs will wear a black gown, a stole to signify the Post-Degree Diploma or Certificate earned, and a hat with tassel.

All other graduands will wear a black gown, a tippet, which also drapes around the shoulders, and a hat with tassel.
