What is the difference between a graduand and graduate?

A graduand is a person who is eligible to graduate but has not yet graduated. During the convocation ceremony, the graduand's degree will be conferred and the graduand will cross the stage. Once this occurs, the graduand is now a graduate.

Where will Convocation be held this year?

This year, Convocation will be held at the Orpheum Theatre. The Orpheum Theatre can be accessed by public transit. If traveling via the Canada Line, get off at Vancouver City Centre and walk south down Granville towards Smithe Street. If traveling via the Expo Line, get off at the Granville Street Station and head south on Granville Street.

What time should I arrive?

We request that all graduands arrive 1 hour and 45 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony and enter the Orpheum Theatre at 884 Granville Street. Graduands must arrive early to ensure ample time to be checked in, to receive their academic regalia, credential(s), and to be lined up for the procession according to their graduation number.

For those convocating during the morning ceremony, please arrive at 8:00 am.

For those convocating during the afternoon ceremony, please arrive at 1:30 pm.

What time should my guests arrive?

For the morning ceremony, please have your guests arrive at 9:00 am. For the afternoon ceremony, please have your guests arrive at 2:30 pm.  Guest entrance is located at 601 Smithe Street.

Latecomers will be seated by ushers when there is an appropriate break in the ceremony. Please note, those who are more than 30 minutes late after the start of the ceremony may have their unclaimed guest ticket released to guests without tickets.

What time should staff and faculty arrive?

Doors open for staff and faculty at 8:00 am for morning ceremonies and 1:30 pm for afternoon ceremonies at 865 Seymour Street entrance. Staff and faculty should have either have an electronic or printed copy of their ticket for entrance into the Orpheum Theatre. How do I access my tickets?

Log into your ticketing account using your student email that ends When you visit the ticketing site for the first time you will need to set a password. Once you have logged in, you will be able to access your tickets to download as a PDF to keep as an electronic copy or to print.

Graduands and all guests must have a ticket in order to enter the Orpheum Theatre. Each ticket has a unique code that can only be scanned once. Vancouver Civic Theatres requires that all audience members, including children, must have a ticket. There are no exemptions to this policy regardless of the child’s age.

Are there any remaining guest tickets I can order?

Unfortunately, we do not have any guest tickets remaining for any of the ceremonies this year. Graduands can email to be put on a wait list. 

On the day of the ceremony, unclaimed guest tickets will be released to those waiting 30 minutes after the procession begins on a first come, first served basis. These latecomers will be seated by an usher when there is an appropriate break in the ceremony.

What should I wear?

All graduands are required to wear academic regalia. Your black gown will cover most of your clothing. However, a portion of your legs and feet will be visible. If you wish for your clothes to blend in, we recommend wearing black pants, dress, or skirt.

The only exceptions to not wearing academic regalia are ceremonial First Nations' regalia, law enforcement, or armed forces formal dress uniform in place of or with Langara regalia. If you will be wearing any of these alternatives, please email to confirm your attendance.

Please wear shoes you are comfortable walking in! The ceremony will require you to walk up and down stairs and will require standing for a period of time.

Do I need to wear academic regalia?

Yes, all graduands will be required to wear academic regalia consisting of a black gown and mortarboard (grad cap). A hood, stole, or tippet will be worn depending on the credential you are graduating with. To view Langara academic regalia, please visit the regalia guide here.

What do I do if I forgot to order regalia?

Graduands who did not reserve their regalia online prior to the deadline, can pay a late fee of $60.00 (rental fee of $35 plus an additional $25 late fee) and rent their regalia at the Orpheum Theatre. Cash, Visa,or Debit can be used to pay for the rental.

There will be a limited amount of regalia available for rental at the Orpheum on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrive as early as possible so that you can rent regalia on the day of the ceremony. Unfortunately, graduands will not be permitted to participate in the convocation ceremony if they are not in academic regalia.

Will I receive my credential(s) on the day of my ceremony?

Yes, your credential will be available for pick up prior to the start of the ceremony. In order for your credential to be released to you, please bring your Langara student ID or valid government issued photo ID.

Graduates who do not attend the convocation ceremonies can pick up their credential from Registrar and Enrolment Services between June 26, 2019 and July 5, 2019. Credentials not picked up will be mailed to the address on the student's file.

How long is the ceremony?

The ceremony lasts approximately 2 hours.

After I cross the stage, can me and my guests leave immediately?

To prevent disruption of the ceremony, all graduates and their guests must remain in the theatre until the conclusion of the entire ceremony.

Will the ceremony be photographed or recorded?

Graduates will be photographed with their credential after they cross the stage. Prints will be available for purchase shortly after the ceremony.

The ceremony will be live streamed and will be available to view here. A 360 degree video will be available on Facebook and YouTube. Following the ceremony, the video will be available in the Archive of Graduation Ceremonies webpage.

Can my guests take photos?

Yes, guests may take photos and/or video of the ceremony. However, we request that guests remain in their seats and be mindful of other guests when taking photos.

What if I am no longer able to attend my ceremony? 

If you or any of your guests are unable to attend convocation, please contact by as soon as possible to cancel your tickets.

You will be able to pick up your credential from Registrar and Enrolment Services between June 26, 2019 and July 5, 2019. Credentials not picked up will be mailed to the address on the student's file.

My guest has accessibility concerns. What arrangement can be made?

Prior to the event, please contact so that staff can arrange any necessary accommodations. If you were unable to contact the Convocation Team prior to the ceremony, on the day of the ceremony, please have your guest identify themselves to Orpheum Theatre ushers.

Please note, there is an elevator available for use at the 601 Smithe Street entrance. Closed captioning will be available.

Where can I park?

The Orpheum Theatre does not have a parkade attached but there is parking in the neighborhood, at meters, and public parking lots. Please give yourself extra time before the event to find parking.
