Vancouver, BC – Langara College has developed a Sexual Respect Ambassador Program for employees. The program is being piloted for one year beginning on August 1, 2017, and is intended to support the College’s Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy (B3009) that was officially launched in February.

The goal of the Sexual Respect Ambassador Program is to recruit and train faculty and staff on how to prevent and respond effectively to sexual violence and misconduct. Ambassadors are given an opportunity to be trained on such topics including responding to disclosures, trauma-informed approach, and bystander intervention. It is an initiative run by People Services, Student Services, and the Sexual Violence Prevention Committee (comprised of Langara students and employees).

“So far, we have received positive feedback about the program, and I think this is indicative of the respectful culture that Langara has fostered over the years. I’d like to thank the Sexual Violence and Prevention Committee for all of their work in making this initiative come to life,” says Dawn Palmer, Vice-President of People Services.

“It’s great to see that Langara is taking an active role in promoting sexual consent and awareness on campus. I think a lot of students aren’t really clear on what sexual violence means. As a student, it’s nice to know that the school I go to cares and wants to develop programs to keep everyone aware and supported.” Wincy Wu, a fourth-year BBA Business Management student.

Once trained, the ambassadors will be able to respond to disclosures as well as act as peer resources for fellow faculty and staff that may have questions about the processes and procedures outlined in the Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy. The first training session begins today on August 1, 2017.

“In order to effectively learn, one needs to feel secure in their environment, whether it is going to classes, or studying on campus. This initiative is a wonderful first step to ensuring our students are further supported in their studies,” says Maggie Ross, Director of Student Conduct & Judicial Affairs.

Langara currently has a number of resources available to students and employees who disclose incidents of sexual violence. This includes counselling, health services, a 24H safewalk, and special accommodations. The College is currently developing additional online resources for students and employees, and looking to have additional educational workshops in the near future.
