Good health starts with making sure you have up-to-date health insurance. All students are required to have basic health insurance. International students are also required by law to have comprehensive health and accident insurance while staying in BC.
Basic Medical Insurance
Basic medical insurance includes doctor's visits, hospital visits, and necessary medical tests or services.
The Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) is the basic coverage for all residents of BC, including international students. You will qualify for MSP after a waiting period of approximately three months.
Apply for MSP as soon as you arrive in Vancouver. Application forms are available on the MSP site or from the International Education office.
Current MSP fees are $37.50 per month and can be paid monthly, or in three, six, or twelve month instalments. Fees are subject to change without prior notice.
For the first two-three months, depending on their arrival date, international students MUST arrange for private medical insurance while they are waiting for their MSP to start. You may choose your own company (minimum $2 million coverage), but Langara recommends GuardMe insurance which you can purchase at www.guard.me/langaracollege.
Extended Health & Dental Plan
Extended health and dental plans include coverage for some of the costs for vision care, dental care, prescription drugs, travel insurance, and other healthcare needs not covered by basic insurance.
All full-time students who are registered for the Fall Semester and who are members of the Langara Student Union (LSU) are automatically enrolled into the LSU Health & Dental Plan. Students starting in January will need to self-enrol in the plan with the online application. Students starting in May are not eligible until the following September.
Membership to the LSU is part of the student fees paid by students in regular studies programs as well as diploma and post-degree programs. Students in Continuing Studies programs, including LEAP, will need to arrange for private insurance during their studies.
Visit the ihaveaplan website to apply in January, learn more about coverage, and make a claim. You can also reach a dedicated Langara representative by calling 1 866 369-8796.
The Student Health Services provides accessible medical care for all students. Student Health Service staff includes three doctors, a registered nurse, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist.
