Duncan McCallum

Honour Duncan’s contribution to Langara College and help to build the Duncan McCallum Athletic Scholarship

On June 17th, Duncan McCallum, the College’s first and longest serving Director of Athletics (1970 -1994)  was named one of Langara’s Emeriti for 2020, an honorary title conferred to retired faculty or professional staff to recognize their distinguished service to the College.

Duncan dedicated his professional life to Langara College and its students. He was the men’s basketball coach at Langara from 1970 to 1991. During that time, not only did run the most successful and decorated athletics program in the province, but also one of the top collegiate athletic programs in Canada. In addition to this, Duncan spent time in the classroom and was an instructor in the Kinesiology (formerly Human Performance) Department throughout his tenure at the College. Duncan has made a profound contribution to Langara, as well as to the sport community across British Columbia and Canada.   His legacy will always be the athletes he coached and students he taught.

“The decision I made to play for him was one of the best decision of my life. Not only did he teach me skills on the basketball court and in the classroom but he taught me about life. To me Duncan was a teacher, a Basketball Coach, an Athletic Director, a mentor and a father figure." - Kevin Hanson, Alumni, former instructor and Basketball Coach Langara College, Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient
