June 11, 2018 (Vancouver, BC) - The Langara Falcons have named Curtis Nelson as the new head coach of the women’s basketball team.
“We are thrilled to have Curtis as a key member of Langara’s athletics program,” said Jake McCallum Director, Athletics and Intramurals. “His passion and dedication to the game and to the student athletes that play it are second to none. His infectious energy and basketball knowledge will serve the team well.”
Nelson has two decades of coaching experience, including seven years at the collegiate level. In 2012-13, he was named the PACWEST Coach of the Year with Douglas College.
“I’m excited to join the Langara family and have the opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program. Langara has an exceptional tradition both academically and athletically, and I’m humbled to have been chosen as the new head coach”.
Nelson’s ambition is to have an impact on his student athletes beyond the X’s and O’s. “I believe in creating a family environment that empowers and supports everyone to learn and discover. From this we can become the best version of ourselves, on and off of the court. To assist in the development of our student-athletes is something that I can’t wait to get started on.”
“This is a very competitive conference. Although there’s no easy weekends on the schedule, we have a great base here to work with, and a lot of support from the college,” Nelson said. “I feel so fortunate to be a part of this environment and to get a chance to travel the road with such a talented team.”
Prior to joining the Falcons, Nelson coached at Douglas College (PACWEST), Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (ACAC), and most recently at Ardrossan High School in Alberta.
The 2018-2019 PACWEST women’s basketball season begins on Friday, November 2 when the Falcons play host to the Douglas College Royals.
