MatthewSecond-year business student Matt Chan (Calgary, AB) is no stranger to the court this season. The former 2014 PACWEST Men’s Singles Champion brought outstanding results this weekend at the 2015 PACWEST Provincial Championships hosted by KPU. Matt not only went undefeated in both the team and individual events, but he also helped the Falcons capture the PACWEST Conference Championship title for the second year in a row. Saturday’s team event was crucial as the winner would take home the provincial title. Matt’s first opponent was VIU’s Graydon Robb. The Mariner pushed Matt to three sets with Matt losing the first set 17-21. The Falcon’s determination led him to come back and fight hard to take the next two sets 21-19, 21-18. In the second round, Matt dominated against KPU’s Lawson Chan. Matt breezed through the match winning 21-5, 21-6. Sunday was the individual qualifying for nationals. Matt’s first opponent was VIU’s Connor Powell where he defeated the Mariner 21-8, 21-12. A nationals berth was in sight as Matt faced KPU’s Lawson Chan in the finals. Chan defeated the Eagle 21-12, 21-10 to clinch his second consecutive provincial title. Matt will be representing team PACWEST at the upcoming CCAA Badminton National Championships held at Kings College in Halifax.
