Nathan
Men's Badminton Athlete of the Week
Nathan Choi (Langara College)

Langara Falcons Nathan Choi finished off the regular season this weekend by dominating in the team and individual event at the PACWEST Badminton Provincial Championships held at KHAS Badminton Center in Richmond.

In the team event, Choi competed in both men's doubles and mixed doubles and went undefeated 3-0. He played a crucial role in helping the Falcons become the 2014 conference champions, breaking Douglas College's winning streak of 8 years. The last time any school other than Douglas to win the Team Championship was Langara back in 2004-05.

In the individual event, Choi competed in the Mixed Doubles event with partner Ashley Jang.  In the first round, Choi and Jang defeated TRU duo McNeilly/Dufort 21-11, 22-20.  They then went on to defeat the VIU pair Foster/Bartulabac 21-12, 21-10.  The last round was not an easy one as they took KPU pair Chung/Chong to 3 sets at the last tournament held at TRU.  With the KPU team playing with home court advantage, Choi and Jang struggled in the 1st set losing 10-21.  With some perseverance the duo came back to take the 2nd set with a close 22-20.  With it coming down to the third set, Choi was not going to give up his vision of winning Provincial Gold.  At one point the Falcons were down 18-20 with KPU having match point. His determination and teamwork brought the Falcons back to win the hard fought set 22-20, earning the Provincial title.

Nathan Choi is a strong contender to watch for at the upcoming CCAA Nationals February 26th- March 1st held at NAIT in Edmonton.

Women's Badminton Athlete of the week
Ashley Jang (Langara College)

Langara's Ashley Jang has not disappointed this season. Her results this past weekend at the PACWEST Badminton Provincial Championships was the perfect story book ending to her last year as a Falcon.

Competing in women's doubles and mixed doubles in the team event, Jang went undefeated 3-0.  She has helped the Falcon's to their 1st place league standing as well as leading the Falcons to take the PACWEST conference title this past weekend.

In the individual event, Jang competed in the mixed doubles category with partner Nathan Choi. The Falcons beat TRU pair McNeilly/Dufort 21-11, 22-20.  They then went on to defeat VIU duo of Foster/Bartulabac 21-12, 21-10.  Jang knew it would not be an easy fight in the final as their opponents, KPU's Chung/Chong, had home court advantage.  The Falcons trailed the first set, losing 10-21.  Jang had to refocus, which helped her make a comeback in the 2nd set winning 22-20.  Down 18-20 in the 3rd set, Choi & Jang gave it their all and came back 4 points to take the set 22-20, and win the Provincial title.  It was a fitting victory to end her PACWEST career.

Ashley Jang will be a strong contender to watch for at the upcoming CCAA Nationals, February 26th-March 1st held at NAIT in Edmonton.
