Men's Badminton Athlete of the Week
Langara Falcons Nathan Choi finished off the regular season this weekend by dominating in the team and individual event at the PACWEST Badminton Provincial Championships held at KHAS Badminton Center in Richmond.
In the team event, Choi competed in both men's doubles and mixed doubles and went undefeated 3-0. He played a crucial role in helping the Falcons become the 2014 conference champions, breaking Douglas College's winning streak of 8 years. The last time any school other than Douglas to win the Team Championship was Langara back in 2004-05.
In the individual event, Choi competed in the Mixed Doubles event with partner Ashley Jang. In the first round, Choi and Jang defeated TRU duo McNeilly/Dufort 21-11, 22-20. They then went on to defeat the VIU pair Foster/Bartulabac 21-12, 21-10. The last round was not an easy one as they took KPU pair Chung/Chong to 3 sets at the last tournament held at TRU. With the KPU team playing with home court advantage, Choi and Jang struggled in the 1st set losing 10-21. With some perseverance the duo came back to take the 2nd set with a close 22-20. With it coming down to the third set, Choi was not going to give up his vision of winning Provincial Gold. At one point the Falcons were down 18-20 with KPU having match point. His determination and teamwork brought the Falcons back to win the hard fought set 22-20, earning the Provincial title.
Nathan Choi is a strong contender to watch for at the upcoming CCAA Nationals February 26th- March 1st held at NAIT in Edmonton.
