Langara Hosts 7th Annual Vancouver Girls’ Basketball Challenge
January 21, 2014, Vancouver, BC – Langara, in partnership with the Vancouver Girls Basketball Association (VGBA), is proud to host the seventh Vancouver Girls’ Basketball/Langara Challenge.
The tournament, held annually at the College, features Vancouver’s top high school basketball programs from both the public and the private systems. It provides a venue for young women from across the Lower Mainland to develop their skills in a competitive and spirited setting.
There are 16 teams at both the junior and senior levels participating at this year’s competition, including Britannia, Eric Hamber, and Kitsilano Secondary Schools, and York House, Crofton House, and Notre Dame independent schools. The tournament runs from January 23 to 25 at Langara’s main campus gymnasium (100 West 49th Avenue). The College will also be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to a pair of outstanding participants.
“We look forward to hosting the VGBA Challenge for the seventh year in a row,” said Jake McCallum, Director of Athletics and Intramurals at Langara. “Since the tournament began in 2008 Langara has seen some extremely talented basketball players come through our doors, and a number of past participants have continued their academic and athletic pursuits at the college and university levels. We’re also proud to be able to support these efforts with two scholarships.”
Past tournament award winners that have joined Langara’s Falcons basketball program include Marinel Santiago, Charlotte Lau, Karen Li, Toni Li, Jolissa Crossley, and Jessica Eng.
The VGBA/Langara Challenge is made possible because of the support of numerous prominent members of the girls’ basketball community in Vancouver. Without the hard work and contributions of these individuals this prestigious all-female event would not be possible, and Langara’s Athletics Department would like to express thanks on behalf of the College.
Schedule at Langara:
Friday, January 24: 2:00pm to 8:30pm
Saturday, January 25: 8:00am to 9:30pm (gold medal match tip-off at 7:00 pm, followed by awards presentation)
Founded in 2008, the Vancouver Girls Basketball Association started the Vancouver Girls’ Basketball Challenge in an effort to offer a sustainable basketball program for high school girls who live in Vancouver. The program provides opportunities for girls to develop basketball skills, sportsmanship, and a love for the game.
