Ashley Jang Langara Falcons
General Arts student Ashley Jang continues to prove to be one of the stronger female players in the PACWEST Badminton League. This past weekend at TRU, the former PACWEST Provincial Champion and CCAA National Champion earned impressive results.
Jang played a crucial role in helping the Falcons to a 1st place team finish on Saturday. She went undefeated with a record 4-0. In the individual events on Sunday, Jang competed in both the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles category and finished with exceptional results, including a personal best of the season, winning the Mixed Doubles category.
In the Women’s Doubles event, Jang and partner Florina Lau were determined to put up a fight after their 3rd place finish at VIU back in November. The Falcon duo showed ease finishing up top in their preliminary pool beating two TRU pairs Arduini and Banman 21-7, 21-12 and Hines and Peters 21-5, 21-4. In the semi-finals where they faced KPU team Chong and Kwee, the pair went down in the first set, but they refocused and came back to take the next two sets winning 21-23, 21-18, 21-16. They faced the Douglas duo of Lougheed and Doan in the Finals, where they played a hard fought match but unfortunately fell short in 3 sets 22-20, 19-21, 19-12. It was a well deserved 2nd place finish.
Jang did not let her previous loss affect her play in the Mixed Doubles event where she competed with teammate Nathan Choi. Her natural talent in the Mixed Doubles category helped her and her partner ease through the preliminary pool beating TRU pairs McNeilly and Dufort 21-10, 21-10 and VIU’s Bartulabac and Foster 21-12, 21-12. In the semi-finals, Jang’s drive led her and partner Choi to beat teammates Chan and Hang 22-20, 21-19. Jang and Choi met KPU pair Chung and Chong in the Finals. Keeping their focus the Falcons pair won in 3 hard fought sets 21-19, 22-24, 21-13.
