Women’s Soccer Winner – Olivia Kappeli (Langara)

PACWEST Week 03 – September 22, 2013

oliviaAs the PACWEST enters its third week of play, it took a great defensive performance from Olivia Kappeli and the Falcons to slow down both the UBCO Heat and TRU WolfPack.   Both the Heat and WolfPack were sitting one and two in the PACWEST standings with Langara in 4th entering the weekend games.  This 5’ 9” defender from North Delta played a key role in Falcons earning 4 valuable points on home soil.

On Saturday, the UBC Okanagan Heat were first up.  Langara controlled the match from the outset and Kappeli was a major force in the back for the Falcons in shutting down the Heat attack.  She was extremely adept at stepping up to cut out many Heat balls and was dominant in the air.  Kappeli would also provide quality service to the Falcon front runners and was instrumental in keeping possession of the ball.  When the final whistle blew, it was a convincing 2-0 decision for the Falcons.

On Sunday, the two-time PACWEST Champions, TRU WolfPack, and current leaders in the standings were up against a Falcon team fresh off a convincing victory the day before.   Kappeli had the Falcons backline organized and had the WolfPack hemmed in their own half for the first twenty minutes of the game but were unable to capitalize.  TRU's Alanna Bekkering would wriggle free and beat a couple of Falcons before neatly finishing, giving the WolfPack a 1-0 lead.  Langara would eventually be awarded a penalty kick in the dying minutes after the WolfPack goalkeeper hauled down a Falcon striker.  Langara would score and the game would end in a 1-1 tie.  Kappeli was instrumental in helping the Falcons secure 4 points this weekend against the top two ranked teams in the PACWEST.  Langara now possesses the stingiest goal against in the conference allowing only 4 goals in 6 games.
