Cutting Down on Energy and Emissions at Langara

BC’s public sector is officially carbon neutral, a first for any province or state in North America and an achievement that places British Columbia on the leading edge of climate action and growth in the clean energy and clean technology sectors. With the introduction of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act in 2008, all public sector organizations, including Langara, report annually on their plans and actions taken to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These reports are known as Carbon Neutral Action Reports (CNARs).

Since 2009, Langara has participated in the BC Hydro Energy Manager Program. At that time, Langara set a goal to reduce energy usage on campus by 15% over a five-year period. At the end of the five years, we met and exceeded our target, achieving 19% energy savings. These savings resulted in approximately $350,000 avoided utility cost.

Recycling Program Update

In 2012, the College developed an in-depth recycling program as part of its goal of zero-waste management. From providing additional recycling/composting units to education to changing policies to support recyclable materials in the cafeteria, the College has seen a dramatic reduction in waste. From 2012-2014, we have reduced our waste by 44.23%, saving 51.32 metric tons of waste from going into the landfill.
