Temporary, Part Time (0.4 FTE)

Dates: January 2, 2020 to April 30, 2020

Under the direction of the Chair of the Applied Research Centre with the support of the Department Chair, this position will collaborate with researchers to support research at Langara College. This laboratory demonstrator will be responsible for the supervision (training and guidance) of undergraduate students involved with the research. They will be responsible for the preparation of samples, execution of experiments, and collection of data. The Laboratory Demonstrator (r) must possess the ability to operate departmental instrumentation for example (but not limited to) GCMS, HPLC, FTIR, UV/Vis, NMR and provide routine maintenance for these instruments. Additionally, the Laboratory Demonstrator (r) maintains laboratory supplies and space for research and actively participates in the development of new research.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science (Chemistry Major). Completion of a Masters in Chemistry (Analytical) preferred.
  • Two (2) years of chemistry laboratory experience combined with general maintenance of supplies, equipment, and demonstration kits.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience of health and safety operations and requirements, including WHMIS safety standards and practices.
  • Experience using instrumentation such as GCMS, HPLC, FTIR, UV/Vis, NMR and provide routine maintenance for these instruments
  • Experience in a chemistry research environment
  • Proficiency with databases, and analytical tools.

  • Ability to effective maintain collaborative working relationships with superiors, faculty, staff, students and members of the public.

  • Ability to respond and manage potentially dangerous, hazardous, or emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility.
  • Ability to operate GC/MS and/or HPLC instrumentation.

Working Conditions:

  • Able to work flexible hours as required.

Salary Range: $30.62 - $35.90 Hourly (Pay Grade 27)

Hours & Days of Work: Approximately 2 days per week. Hours may vary according to the needs of the department. This position is not subject to the compressed workweek schedule.
