Job Title: Instructor, Design Studio

Description of Position: The department is seeking an instructor to teach one section of Foundation Design Studio on Tuesdays from 9 to 12:50 for each of Fall term 2018 and Spring term 2019

The qualified candidate should have:

Experience working with the following tools and materials:

  • 2D and 3D software (Adobe illustrator, Rhinoceros 3D)
  • General model making hand tools and a range of scale model making materials (wire, cardboard, foam, adhesives, etc.)
  • Manual technical drawing materials

Experience with the following techniques:

  • Design thinking (research, ideation, iteration, prototyping, revision)
  • Sketching, general graphics layout, technical drawing + scaling (orthographic and isometric),
  • Manual 3D fabrication
  • Public presentation
  • Knowledge of current thinking in relation to sustainability

Duties and Responsibilities:

The work includes:

* Four hours of class time per week

* Lectures, demonstrations and providing guidance as students work on projects

* Leading critique and one-on-one feedback

* Weekly office hours

* Participating in departmental activities such as meetings and grad show support.

Required Qualifications:

* Masters degree in Design or related field   

* Post secondary teaching experience will be considered an asset, particularly design instruction within a fine art context

* A professional practice that explores the intersections between design, critical design and fine art. Please indicate in your CV your history of public presentations in a professional context, including any grants, awards, publications and bibliography, as well as contact information for three professional references

* Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide additional materials such as evidence of teaching effectiveness and a statement of teaching philosophy. Shortlisted candidates will also be asked to present a portfolio of 20 images in person

Length of appointment: September 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019

Start Date: September 1, 2018

Salary Range: Salary placement is on Langara instructors’ salary scale in accordance with qualifications and experience.
