We are available throughout the week for one-on-one advising appointments (prior booking required) or you can attend our Walk-In Advising sessions which are posted on our doors and on the LSM website. We are your first point of contact for the department for a variety of needs and issues, including course planning, program advice, pre-requisite issues, switching programs, and many more. Feel free to come to our office to book an appointment or ask a question. We are located in B253Q and B253P or can be contacted at 604-323-5255 or business@langara.ca.

Thinking about switching business programs?

If you would like to switch concentrations within the same credential type (ex. Diploma in Business Management to Diploma in Marketing Management; or BBA: Accounting to BBA: Business Management), you may submit your request in an email to business@langara.ca.  Please include your full name, Langara ID, and a sentence requesting the change from your current program to the new program.  The deadline to submit this request for the Fall 2017 term is May 10, 2017.  If you would like to switch from a business Diploma program to the BBA program, you will need to submit a new application at the Registrar’s Office or online through myLangara (deadline for Fall 2017 applications: 31 May).

Students who change programs/concentrations are required to meet all curriculum requirements in place for the semester the change takes effect. Please contact business@langara.ca if you have any questions.

Do you qualify for BBA Upper Division Status?

BBA Upper Division students register one day before BBA Lower Division students.  BBA Lower Division (Term L) students who are eligible to progress to Upper Division (Term U) must complete the "Upper Division Progression Request" form available online. If you have completed all of the requirements for progression into Upper Division, please complete the online form and email it to business@langara.ca. The deadline to submit this form for changes to the Fall 2017 registration period is May 10, 2017. If you have already submitted the request form this term, you do not need to resubmit it.

In order to progress to Upper Division, students must:

  1. have completed a minimum of 60 credits;
  2. have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.33;
  3. have completed all bridging courses for their concentration with a "C" grade or higher.

Courses that are not complete (in progress) cannot be used to meet the above requirements. Please note that we do not make any exceptions to this rule. If you need assistance or have questions, please email the LSM Advising team at business@langara.ca or check our drop-in advising schedule.

Program Change

BBA - Business Mangement, Marketing Management, and Accounting. Previously students were required to choose from FSRV, PSYC or RECR numbered 3XXX or higher; the change allows any 3XXX or 4XXX course that are not BCAP, BUSM, COOP, EXPE, FMGT, INTB, MARK, or STAT. This will allow students to take ASIA 3386 (see below).

New Course Offerings – Fall 2017

NEW! FMGT 2116 – Personal Financial Planning 1

Students will be introduced to personal finance, wealth accumulation and financial planning decisions. The main goal of the course is to equip students with the knowledge and decision-making tools to understand and plan their personal finances in a rewarding and engaging manner. The course helps students make sound financial decisions, with the goal to ultimately manage and increase personal wealth. Topics include money management, purchasing a home, investing in mutual funds and stocks & bonds, insurance, retirement and estate planning, tax planning and more. Taking this course will enhance students’ financial literacy and put them on the path towards a lifetime of financial responsibility and stability.

NEW! MARK 2500 – Selling Skills and Communications

Students explore the principles of professional selling focussing on relationship and needs-based selling. Topics include understanding customer and sales representative behaviour and communications in a selling environment as well as prospecting, preparing different forms of presentations, handling objections, building a sales plan, and employing various closing techniques. Students will be introduced to Customer Relationship Management software. Note: Students will apply their selling skills in a final project that is relevant to the financial or professional services industry.  Students will receive credit for only one of MARK 1200 and MARK 2500.

This course is open to all students.  Students can take either MARK 1200 or 2500 to meet their program requirements.

MARK 4195 - Marketing Analytics

Marketing Analytics will help students build foundational analytic skills in the area of Marketing.  For anyone considering a career in marketing this course will likely help improve their chances of both getting the job and succeeding in the job.  In today’s business environment, marketers must be comfortable with “number crunching”.  Marketers have become increasingly accountable for producing proven results.  They must be able to quantify the outcomes of their efforts and demonstrate how the outcomes support higher level organizational objectives.  The amount of data available to marketers through both online and offline sources continues to increase.  Understanding how to leverage this data into actionable insight has become a critical success factor for today’s organizations.

Students can contact Kevin Koonar kkoonar@langara.ca for more information

NEW! ASIA 3386 - Asian Century: Modern Korea

This interdisciplinary study of modern Korean society addresses the economic, social and cultural transformation of modern and contemporary Korea. The focus of this course is continuity and change in Korean society and people. Students examine the transformation of Korea from a traditional Confucian state into an industrial nation; the rise of nationalism and modern ideologies in Korea; and the cultural, social and economic changes Korea has undergone as it has entered the modern world. In particular, students study the two rival paths of modernization on the Korean peninsula - the capitalist in the South and the communist in the North. Students study the development of the South Korean "economic miracle," the factors shaping its political economy and its integration into the global economy.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of 15 credits, equivalent to 5 courses.

This new Asian Studies course can be used as an upper-level non-business elective towards the BBA program. See the BBA Program webpages for specific requirements.

Repeat Limits

All BCAP, BUSM, FMGT, INTB and MARK courses have a repeat limit of two. If you have registered* in any of these courses two or more times, you need permission to register again:

  • For all 1XXX and 2XXX courses, request a registration override from the School of Management. You can do this by emailing business@langara.ca. Provide your first and last name, your Langara ID number, and the course that you wish to repeat. Provide the course name and number (ex. MARK 1115), not the CRN.
  • For all 3XXX and 4XXX, fill out this form and send to business@langara.ca. Each request will be evaluated on an individual basis.

*If you registered and then dropped the course (i.e. it does not appear on your transcript) it does not count. However, if you registered and then withdrew from the course (i.e. it appears on your transcript with a 'W'), then it does count towards the limit.

BBA Program Maintenance of Standing

BBA Program students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.33 to continue in the third and the fourth years of the BBA. Students unable to attain this minimum will not be permitted to advance.  Students must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.33 and a minimum 'C' grade in all core business-related third- and fourth-year courses (BCAP, BUSM, FMGT, INTB, or MARK courses numbered 3xxx or 4xxx) in order to graduate.
