Documentary Film Production
Provoke and engage. Share your vision.
Make a difference! The Documentary Film Production Certificate Program (full-time) is Vancouver's longest established dedicated intensive documentary training program. A 16-week professional program designed for students from diverse backgrounds, with some or no film experience, who are passionate about factual filmmaking and wishing to pursue a career in the growing world of non-fiction film.
Students are mentored in an intimate environment through the training process. In order to achieve this we accept only 9 students per intake. Sessions run every May and September.
The documentary program, developed by experienced award winning documentary filmmakers, helps students develop thought provoking films about the world we live in. The program offers the creative and technical skills needed to make professional documentary films using the latest camera and editing software in a production house environment. These films are broadcast, shown at festivals, screened on the web and used for promoting awareness in the community.
Our students create films addressing diverse subjects from community based issues such as homelessness, substance abuse and human trafficking to documentary portraits of local artists and entrepreneurs to personal and revealing stories of discovery and transformation.
During this intensive and practical program you will shoot, edit and collaborate in a variety of crew roles on a series of short film exercises while developing your own vision and directing your final graduation film. You will pitch your film to industry professionals and come away with a portfolio worthy of film festivals, traditional and online distribution. The program is connected to a wide variety of industy professionals who come in as guest speakers and mentors.
On completetion, students have secured employment in the educational, NGO and broadcast sectors of the industry or chosen to pursue independent filmmaking opportunities by setting up their own production companies and creating films for multiple markets.
The Documentary Program participates in the Lifetime Alumni Program which means that students who achieve certification in the program are able to take any course in the Part time Digital Film Certificate Program for free for the rest of their life. With the Lifetime Alumni Program, graduate students can come back to upgrade their skills at no cost. For information on the policies and restrictions for the Lifetime Alumni Program please talk to Annat Kennet, Program Coordinator.
