Vancouver, BC - Langara College Continuing Studies and The Tyee are proud to announce the beginning of an ongoing collaboration to bring high-level professional development to a wide audience. Combining Langara Continuing Studies' reputation and institutional recognition with The Tyee's commitment to public engagement and further education for nonprofits and social enterprises, this partnership promises to deliver a high standard of instruction for engaged and passionate students.

The Tyee Master Class series is now in its fifth season, and this June, in its first collaborative class with Langara Continuing Studies, will be offering a data-mapping class aimed at journalists, activists, nonprofits, and government and communications professionals,” says Alison Cairns, programmer for the Tyee Master Classes. Storytelling with Maps & Visualization, a two-day data bootcamp, will be an intensive, hands-on weekend where our expert instructors will equip participants with a manageable toolkit of ideas and software that will have them acquiring, cleaning, mapping, and visualizing data in ways they never knew possible.”

The class will be led by two of Canada’s leading digital data practitioners, Hugh Stimson and Phillip Smith.

“When I took the one-day course in Data Mapping at The Tyee’s office last fall, I was struck by a number of things,” says Judi Piggott, Langara Project Coordinator. “The diversity of people in that overflowing room, their willingness to overcome time and technical challenges to learn an important set of tools, and most of all the quality of Hugh’s instruction and his passion for building our confidence.

“By hosting the two-day Data Boot Camp on our Langara campus, attendees will benefit from having more time and space to learn and to apply these tools to real projects. They will be working in a computer lab with pre-installed software, but can still bring their laptops and download the software to keep growing the skills after the classes are finished. We hope this will be the first of many classes to engage our combined audiences, and we look forward to a fruitful partnership.”
