Renting your textbooks has some advantages and disadvantages over buying. Here are some answers to a few commonly asked questions to help you decide if renting your textbooks is the right choice for you.

Q. How does the rental program work?

It's easy. Come to the Bookstore and select your textbooks off the shelves. If there is a "Rent" price available on the shelf tag, the title is available for rent.  Upon checkout, the cashier will as if you'd like to rent or purchase the book.  If you select the rental option, you will be asked for some personal contact information along with your Student ID card to secure the rental. At the end of the term, you return the book to the bookstore by the return deadline.

Q. Why should I rent from the bookstore versus going online?

Renting from the bookstore offers many advantages to you versus renting from other online sources:

  • You receive competitive pricing.
  • You are assured the correct book based on the order received directly from your instructor.
  • You do not have to wait for the book to be shipped to you.
  • You do not have to pay shipping to receive or return the book.

Q. What happens if I drop a class?

Rented textbooks cannot be refunded.  Do not rent if you suspect you might drop the class.

Q. How can I pay for my rental books?

You can pay for your rental books with a credit card, debit card or cash.

Q. What if I don't return the book?

If the book is not returned, your student account with Langara will be placed on hold, i.e. you will not be able to access your grades, register for courses, or graduate .  To clear this hold, you will need to come in to the Bookstore and pay both the non-return replacement cost and replacement fee that appear on the receipt.

Q. What if I decide I want to keep the book and use it for future reference?

If you decide to keep the book, please come in to the Bookstore before the rental return due date, in order to the avoid additional admin fee.

Q. Why are all books not available for rent?

Unfortunately, not every title is available for rent at this time. In order for the rental program to be successful, the textbook needs to be used for multiple terms. We have selected the textbooks which we are assured will be reused next term either on our campus or elsewhere in the country.

Q. Is renting the textbook a better deal than purchasing it?

When we offer you the option of purchasing the textbook new or used or renting it, it is up to you to decide which option best meets your educational needs.

Q. Where do I return the book at the end of the term?

Please return the book to the Bookstore during our hours of operation.  If you are unable to come in before the deadline, please contact us at bookstore@langara.ca or 604-323-5525.

Q. What if I drop the class or don't need the book once the course begins?

Rented textbooks cannot be refunded.  Do not rent if you suspect you might drop the class.  Click here to view our textbook return policy.

Q. Why do you need a student ID card?

The rental is secured against your student account to ensure that the textbook is returned back to us.  Failure to return the book by the due date set out in the rental agreement will result in a hold being placed on your student account.  The hold will be cleared once the outstanding non-return replacement and non-return handling fees are paid.

Q. So, I don't have to rent my books, right?

No. At the bookstore we want to offer you options. Some students are going to want to rent their books, others may want to own a new book or a used book. No matter what your studying style, or your budget is - we have several options so you can choose the best one for you.

Q. Where can I get more information?

Come in to the bookstore; we will be glad to tell you more about our rental program.
